Changes to Medicare Requirements for Fellows 2021

What is it?

The Health Insurance Amendment (General Practitioner and Quality Assurance) Bill 2020 (the Bill) passed both houses on June 16 2020.

The purpose of this Bill is to simplify the Medicare administrative process for recognition as a Specialist General Practitioner (GP) for Medicare purposes under the Health Insurance Act 1973.

So How Does it Work?

Medical Practitioners who achieve fellowship currently complete a HW075 (RACGP) or HW076 (ACRRM) and submit it to Medicare to be able to be recognised, and bill as a Specialist General Practitioner.

Once this bill comes into effect, General Practitioners will no longer need to apply separately to Services Australia for higher Medicare rebates! You will only need to apply to the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) for Specialist registration in General Practice.

Once you are registered as a Specialist GP, AHPRA will provide this information to Services Australia and your Medicare rebate level will be amended.

Ongoing registration with the Medical Board of Australia will continue to be tied into ongoing access to higher Medicare rebates but Services Australia will rely on the MBA for annual updates rather than on the RACGP and ACRRM proving CPD information every 3 years.

When will it come into effect?

The legislation will commence on the 16th of June 2021.
