Do I need to be on a training program to complete my GP fellowship?

Here at People Medical Consulting we like spreading what we know and giving you a clear pathway to your career. We’re answering a different question each week based on queries raised via our Facebook & Instagram profiles.

Do I need to be on a training program to complete my GP fellowship?

The Short Answer

No. Currently, you only need to be on a ‘training pathway’ or ‘training program’ if you hold Australian permanent residency or citizenship, without holding a Fellowship.

This is due to 19AA requiring Medical Practitioners seeking access to Medicare rebatable services to work on an approved 3GA training program until they achieve Fellowship. This applies to General Practitioners, and to any other Medical Practitioner who seeks to bill Medicare for their services, or have their patients get a rebate.

Will this change?

Yes. From June 2023, to complete Fellowship you will be required to work under one of the training pathways including AGPT, ACRRM Independent Pathway or RVTS.
