In a constantly changing environment, we summarise the most important updates for General Practitioners.
This week’s summary includes updates from:
- The Department of Health
- 3GA Programs
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH-
Total Coronavirus Cases –
There have been a total of 31,516 cases in Australia. There have been 77 new locally acquired cases and 7 overseas acquired cases in the last 24 hours, with 979 current active cases.
Vaccine Operations Centre –
In a big boost to our rollout program, Australia will be receiving one million doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine per week from 19 July – tripling the current rate of supply.
This week, we reached a total number of 9.1 million vaccine doses administered across the country. We passed 9 million doses on Friday, only seven days after reaching the 8 million, and we continue to look for opportunities to further accelerate.
AMC Tests Cancelled –
Due to the current and ever-changing Covid-19 restrictions throughout Australia, the AMC has decided to cancel the in-person clinical examination dates scheduled at the AMC National Test Centre on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August 2021.
The AMC will endeavor to provide as much notice as practical to participants and reschedule examinations to online events or future in-person examination dates.
Candidates scheduled in the cancelled examination dates of the 3rd and 4th and 5th of August, will be offered alternate examination dates.
COVID-19 and intern requirements–
The Board has introduced flexibility for 2021 interns who have had their rotations interrupted because of COVID-19.
This includes a small number of interns who started their intern year in November or December of 2020.
The Board expects that interns will complete 47 weeks accredited service and will complete the full time in each core rotation, unless they have taken genuine COVID-19 related leave. The flexibility is only available to interns who have been unable to work as a direct result of COVID-19, such as a requirement to isolate or due to COVID-19 related illness.
For 2021 interns (including those who commenced in November-December 2020) the requirements are:
Interns who have had to take genuine COVID-related leave must complete:
at least 40 weeks full-time equivalent supervised service (a reduction of up to seven weeks from the standard 47 weeks required)
all accredited core terms, but each term length can be reduced by no more than two weeks if COVID-related leave was taken during that term
a minimum term of:
- eight weeks in surgery
- eight weeks in medicine
- six weeks in emergency medical care and
- a range of other approved terms to make up a minimum of 40 weeks full-time equivalent service.
The intern will need to explain the reasons for the shortfall when the period of supervised practice has been less than 47 weeks, but at least 40.
