How does Medicare know I’m a Fellowed GP?

Here at People Medical Consulting we like spreading what we know and giving you a clear pathway to your career. We’re answering a different question each week based on queries raised via our Facebook & Instagram profiles.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION…?

How does Medicare know I’m a Fellowed GP?

You’ve done it! You’ve passed the Fellowship Exams, and you’re applying to your college for your Fellowship Certificate. You’re going to let AHPRA know.

Why does Medicare need to know?

Medicare has a different rate for Non-VR (those who haven’t completed their Fellowship) and VR (those who have completed their Fellowship). Letting Medicare know you’ve passed your exams means that you can bill the VR rates!

The 19AA and 19AB legislation apply to Medicare, so once you complete your Fellowship then you will no longer have a 19AA restriction.

Do I need to wait for AHPRA to update my record?

No. You can apply to Medicare before you apply to AHPRA, during the process or at any stage after you get your Fellowship from your college.

When can I apply?

You’ll receive a letter from your college confirming you’ve met the requirements for Fellowship. This usually comes accompanied by the form you need to send to Medicare to be recognised. We’ve included these below, just in case.

Form for RACGP: HW075

Form for ACRRM: HW076
