I am applying for GP roles, but I keep getting rejected. Why…?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK…

I am applying for GP roles, but I keep getting rejected. Why…?

There are 2 main reasons that you may be struggling to find General Practice positions.

The practice might be unable to offer you supervision due to either a lack of accredited supervisors or an excess of doctors needing supervision.

You could also be applying to the wrong areas. If you are an IMG and/or Permanent Resident or Citizen, you will only be able to work in DPA and/or MMM 2-7 locations. The clinics you apply to will also need to hold a Health Workforce Certificate if you are on a visa.

So how can you increase your chances of finding a role?

Passing the AMC Clinical is one way to increase your chances as many clinics would prefer to hire a doctor who is competent in clinical skills and knowledge as demonstrated in the AMC Clinical. This also guarantees that you will only require 12 months of supervision before you are able to progress to General Registration.

Making sure you meet Recency of Practice standards will also help you find a job. Demonstrating that you have at least 3 months of experience in the last 3 years will set you above other candidates who might not have worked in years.

It’s also important not to limit yourself to one specific area when applying for jobs. In most cases, you will not be able to work in metropolitan areas and a rural town in Victoria is not too different from a rural town in Queensland.

In our experience too, you will have a lot more success when applying for General Practice positions if you have prior experience in General Practice. Although it isn’t a requirement for Limited Post-Graduate Training or Provisional Registration, we always suggest that if you are looking to work in General Practice in Australia, you should try to have at least 3 years of General Practice Experience in your home country. If you have passed the AMC Clinical we suggest you have at least 12 months experience.
