QUESTION OF THE WEEK…
What hospital rotations do I need to complete before moving onto General Registration…?
As an IMG going into the Hospital System under Limited or Provisional Registration, you will be required to complete a minimum of 12 months of Supervised Practice. Within this time, you are expected to work for a minimum amount of time in required rotations.
WHAT ROTATIONS DO I NEED TO COMPLETE?
You will be expected to satisfactorily complete the following:
- 8 weeks in Emergency Medical Care
- 10 weeks in Medicine
- 10 weeks in Surgery
You will then need to complete an additional 24 weeks of Supervised Practice in one of the above or alternate departments.
You can still receive your General Registration if you haven’t completed the required rotations under the following circumstances:
- If you are able to demonstrate that you have met the learning requirements listed in the ‘Intern Training – Intern Outcome Statements’ document, AHPRA may decide to approve an application for General Registration.
- AHPRA may grant your General Registration in a narrow scope of practice. This will restrict you to practice only in the area you have demonstrated competence in. If you later decide to change your scope of practice, you will be required to complete the required rotations before you receive the unrestricted General Registration.
- If you have been working in General Practice, you are not required to complete these rotations and will need to demonstrate that you have met the learning requirements listed in the Intern Training – Intern Outcome Statements document.
