What is ACRRM & RACGP?

Here at People Medical Consulting we like spreading what we know and giving you a clear pathway to your career. We’re answering a different question each week based on queries raised via our Facebook & Instagram profiles.

What is ACRRM & RACGP?

What are they?

Many specialities have a single college where you can complete your Specialist qualification to become a Fellow of that speciality. General Practice has two- The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and The Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

What is the difference?

The RACGP were the first college to offer Fellowship to General Practitioners, ACRRM joining them in 1998. ACRRM’s point of difference is that they focus on Rural & Remote medicine. Both colleges offer a pathway to fellowship via programs such as AGPT & RVTS. Both colleges have produced their own specific programs as well.

The RACGP offers 3 Fellowship exams at the end of a 4 year experience period.

ACRRM has 5 Fellowship exams (including two work-based assessments).

Which should I choose?

That’s the good thing- you get to choose. Take a look at the requirements, pathways and examinations and choose which one speaks to you.
