Why working rural isn’t as scary as you may think!

We get a lot of doctors contacting us who are restricted by 19AB or 19AA and are scared to live and work in a rural location.

“It’s too far away from the city, there are no schools for my kids, it’s in the middle of nowhere, there’s no public transport, I don’t know if I will be accepted…”- these are only some of the reasons our doctors don’t want to move rural.

But it isn’t as scary as you might think.

In fact, many DPA and MMM 2-7 locations are thriving mini-cities with a wide variety of amenities and all of our smaller towns bring with them their own country charm.

This is why we will be creating a series of mini-blogs about some of the most common reasons people don’t want to move to a rural location and why it isn’t so scary. Here are just a couple of things we are going to explore in the coming weeks…

I CAN’T MOVE RURAL BECAUSE I NEED ACCESS TO A MOSQUE/SYNAGOGUE/CHURCH!

Our upcoming blog, which you can expect to see coming next week, will explore locations in Australia that are a DPA & MMM 2 that have a variety of religious facilities for all cultures! As a quick perview…did you know Bundaberg has a mosque?

I CAN’T MOVE RURAL BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING TO DO!

In another upcoming blog, we’ll explore just some of the MMM 2-7 DPA locations that have some very cool attractions.

I CAN’T MOVE RURAL BECAUSE MY KIDS NEED TO SCHOOL TO GO TO!

You will also be hard pressed not to find a primary school within a reasonable walking distance from your home- even though you may have to travel for high school- but don’t forget the sense of community is much stronger in regional communities and you will often be able to carpool.

I CAN’T MOVE RURAL BECAUSE IT WILL COST MORE!

If you are concerned about the cost of moving and living rurally, you may be surprised to learn that it is actually significantly cheaper to live in a rural town than in the big cities.

Food is often sold by local farmers in your community, and houses in regional areas cost a fraction of what they do in metropolitan areas. This gives you the ability to set yourself up financially for if or when you decide to move metro  in the future.

I CAN’T MOVE RURAL BECAUSE I WON’T HAVE ANY FRIENDS!

Although there seems to be a common misconception that your social life will suffer, this isn’t the case. In fact, due to the community centred nature of these towns and the many social events often hosted by the council, you will have a much easier time getting to know your future friends. Our rural towns are also multicultural hubs… for instance, if you move to Bundaberg you can join the Turkish Islamic Association of Bundaberg.

WHY YOU SHOULD MOVE RURAL!

What many of these towns lack- and what you can provide- are dedicated health services.

On average, Australians living in rural and remote areas have shorter lives, higher levels of disease and injury and poorer access to and use of health services, compared with people living in metropolitan areas.

In some of our more rural towns, residents have to travel over an hour to the nearest doctor to seek help.

So keep an eye out for our upcoming blogs about why it isn’t so scary to move rural!
