Need help understanding your pathway?

Date Updated: 2025-08-18

Having GMC registration and UK experience does not automatically qualify you for the Competent Authority Pathway.

AHPRA will look into your UK course or PLAB certificate and UK experience to see if you’re eligible. Specifically, you will need to meet either of the following categories:

  • Category A – completed PLAB and 1 year experience in UK
  • Category B – graduated from a UK medical program approved by the GMC and 1 year experience in UK

Please note that having a specialist qualification from the UK may make you eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway. If you don’t meet any of the criteria above, then you may be eligible for the Standard Pathway.

If you’re still unsure which pathway to go for, you can check the self-assessment tool by AHPRA to help you decide which pathway you are eligible for registration. Take the test here.
