Supervision is a key role in the Fellowship Support Program (FSP) and provides an opportunity to shape the next generation of general practitioners. Here’s everything you need to know about becoming accredited and what to expect.
What does it mean to be an FSP Supervisor?
As an FSP supervisor, you play a critical role in ensuring your registrar provides safe and appropriate care to patients. You’ll assess their competency, identify their learning needs, teach them, develop plans tailored to their progress, and support your registrar through their journey.
Here are some of the core tasks of a supervisor from the RACGP handbook:
- orientating a registrar to the training site
- supervising the registrar’s initial consultations
- developing and monitoring a clinical supervision plan
- providing ‘as needed’ supervision
- developing an in-practice teaching plan
- providing regular uninterrupted teaching sessions
- giving regular feedback
- completing required assessments
- coordinating the supervisory team
- supporting and advocating for the registrar with the training site and the RACGP
- evaluating the education and supervision provided.
As an FSP Supervisor, you will also be able to gain new skills through workshops and learning modules, support the next generation of GPs, and receive supervisor payments for the program.
Tip: Finish the Early Assessment for Safety and Learning (EASL) within the first 2 weeks of your registrar’s placement. This helps you gauge where they’re at and create a tailored teaching plan.
Am I eligible to be a supervisor?
Every training site needs an accredited supervisor who provides clinical and educational support to registrars, ensuring their safety and competence. To be eligible, you’ll need:
- Fellowship with RACGP and/or ACRRM
- Full, unrestricted Specialist Registration in general practice with AHPRA
- Ideally at least 4 years working in general practice in Australia with 2 years post-Fellowship
- To be currently working in comprehensive general practice
- Accreditation under the RACGP Standards for general practice training
For accreditation requirements, you will also be required to have an interview with your local Medical Educator (ME) and complete the learning modules for new supervisors.
Please note all RACGP supervisors are limited to supervising 3 registrars maximum across all training pathways.
How do I become an accredited supervisor?
To become an accredited supervisor, you must be nominated by a registrar through their FSP application.
Within the supervisor accreditation process, you will need to sign the supervisor agreement. Then, you will need to complete the following:
- Foundations of GP Supervision Program (Modules 1-7)
- RACGP Introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness module
- A 30-minute supervisor interview with an RACGP Medical Educator
- Note: You will be contacted by the accreditation team for FSP to set up a virtual interview
The online modules will always be accessible through the RACGP website. RACGP also suggests finishing the modules before your FSP supervisor accreditation interview, but note that you have up to 90 days from the start of supervision.
After completing the modules and interview, the FSP Accreditation Panel will decide the accreditation status (full, conditional, or not to progress). If you’re granted accreditation, you’ll receive a certificate valid for 3 years. RACGP will guide you through ongoing requirements and provide resources to help you succeed in your role.
Why is there a maximum of 3 registrars per supervisor?
To ensure quality supervision and registrar wellbeing, RACGP limits each supervisor to 3 registrars across all training programs.
What if I work offsite?
While on-site supervision is ideal, off-site supervision is allowed in specific circumstances. For example, if a registrar is unable to nominate a suitable supervisor who’s located at the training site where they work, then an off-site supervisor may be nominated and approved.
Supervising a FSP registrar is a rewarding experience that allows you to contribute to the future of general practice. By supporting their journey, you’re helping to ensure the next generation of GPs is skilled, confident, and ready to provide exceptional care. For more details, visit the RACGP website here.
