There are no mandatory hospital training requirements upon application for GP training programs. This includes the:
- Australian General Practice Training (AGPT)
- ACRRM Independent Pathway (IP)
- RACGP Fellowship Support Program (FSP)
- FSP also has no mandatory hospital segment in its training program.
RACGP
RACGP has specified in writing that AGPT has no hospital experience requirements that affect eligibility to apply, because the first year of the AGPT Program is hospital-based. You will have 12 months hospital training time and if you have already met some or all of the AGPT hospital & paediatric competency requirements, you might be able to reduce your training time and apply for recognition of prior learning and experience (RPLE). Please note the hospital requirements should be completed before starting your core vocational training (general practice terms).
FSP also has no mandatory hospital training requirements, as many doctors sit a PESCI then start working as a GP straight away.
ACRRM
ACRRM also stated in writing that registrars joining ACRRM Fellowship programs (AGPT or IP) are not required to have completed their mandatory hospital rotations prior to commencement. These rotations are typically undertaken during the PGY2 year and can be completed while enrolled in the program. You will complete the minimum training requirements in Primary Care, Secondary Care, Emergency Care, Rural or Remote Practice, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, and Anaesthetics through the program. Overall, there are no specific requirements that must be completed before starting in a primary care setting.
While completing rotations is the most efficient and hassle-free way to meet the requirements, there are also alternative ways to fulfil them, as outlined in the Training Handbook, specifically rotations in Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Emergency Department (ED), and Anaesthetics. Each of these requirements can be met either through formal rotations or through other formats, depending on the specific requirement. For example, the Anaesthetic requirement has these training options and evidences required:
- 10-weeks or more FTE anaesthetics placement (Evidence: End of Term Assessment)
- 6 months or more FTE in a combination of placements providing anaesthetics skills (e.g. ICU, emergency, or retrieval)
- Evidence:
- End of Term Assessment or Supervisor report or Verification of Clinical Experience proforma
- Log 50 procedures selected from the Anaesthetic component in the Procedural Skills Logbook in the Case Log Proforma
- Evidence:
- Integrated rural hospital placement
- Evidence:
- End of Term Assessment or Supervisor report or Verification of Clinical Experience proforma
- Log 50 procedures selected from the Anaesthetic component in the Procedural Skills Logbook in the Case Log Proforma
- Evidence:
- Clinical attachment or work with an anaesthetic RG or a specialist Anaesthetist (minimum of 10 anaesthetic half day sessions).
- Evidence:
- Confirmation of 10 sessions
- Supervisor report or Verification of Clinical Experience proforma
- Log 50 procedures selected from the Anaesthetic component in the Procedural Skills Logbook in the Case Log Proforma
- An advanced airways skills workshop or RVTS workshop (RVTS registrars only)
- Evidence:
- ProStart Anaesthetics program
- Evidence: Certificate of completion
- Advanced Certificate Rural General Anaesthetics (ACRGA)
- Evidence: Letter of completion
