Average Earning in General Practice
When doctors move into General Practice from overseas or even from the Hospital System, one of their first questions is “how much am I going to make?”
In Australian General Practice there are many things that will contribute to how much you will take home at the end of the day. These include:
- Your percentage of Billings
- Number of clinical sessions per week
- Desired length of these sessions
- The number of patients you see per hour
- The average fee for each patient
- Hours you work per year
- The types of procedures you perform
- Additional qualifications
- Whether the clinic is bulk billing or mixed
In Australian General Practice the most important thing to remember is that percentage doesn’t matter as much as the number of patients you are seeing.
For example, if you want to earn $200,000 per year, and you are seeing 4 patients per hour and earning 65% of Billings, you will need to bill (gross) around $570,000 a year.
However, if you want to earn around $200,000 per year, and you are seeing 6 patients per hour and earning 60% of Billings, you will need to bill (gross) around $333,333 per year.
RACGP has created a Billings Calculator to help you figure out exactly how much you will make in your own personal circumstances.
The amount of procedures, health assessments and care plans you provide for patients can also affect how much you make.
For example, a standard consultation takes around 15 minutes per patient and bills $37.50, whilst the preparation of a care plan can take up to 30 minutes and bills $148.75.
