Why would I start in the hospital system?

AHPRA is quite strict about allowing doctors to work in the General Practice field under Limited AHPRA Registration.

For some, without GP experience or with minimal GP experience, the safer route is to start in the hospital system.

Why is it safer and why is AHPRA strict?

Working in the hospital system means you’re constantly backed up by other doctors and nurses working with and around you. Any mistakes can be picked up more quickly than in General Practice where you’re essentially working on your own. It is an easier and safer transition into the Australian Medical industry and once you’re established, you can move into General Practice.

How do I move into General Practice?

Once you get started in the hospital system, and complete your AMC Part 1 & Part 2, you’ll need to complete the mandatory rotations in ED (8 weeks), Medical (10 weeks) and Surgical (10 weeks). Once you’ve reached 12 months, you can apply to AHPRA to consider you for General AHPRA Registration.

Once you have General AHPRA, you can start looking for your pathway to General Practice.
