Item Numbers for GPs practising Telehealth

From November 1st 2019, General Practitioners will be eligible to bill item numbers for offering Telehealth services to patients in rural and remote locations. This is for all General Practitioners, both Specialist and non-Specialist. 

Who is eligible? 

All General Practitioners are eligible, if their patients are:

• Living in a MMM 6 – 7 location,
• Have seen the billing GP 3 times in a face to face consult within the 12 months previously,
• Be greater than 15km by road from the billing GP. 

There is no restriction on the location of the GP providing the services.

The new items will replicate the current system in both clinical requirements and rebates

How should the services be provided? 

The Doctor and patient can both hear and see one another, so telephone only consultations aren’t eligible. There are a wide variety of video consultation services available.
