The Relationship between PESCI & AHPRA

WHAT IS A PESCI?

A PESCI is conducted to assess the applicant’s knowledge, skills and experience to practice safely and effectively in the position for which they are seeking Limited or Provisional AHPRA Registration. A PESCI will result in either a Suitable or Unsuitable outcome.

To be eligible to apply for a PESCI, you will need to have a current job offer as PESCI’s are an evaluation of your suitability for a specific position.

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

PESCI’s are important not only because they decide whether or not you are suitable for a specific job position but will contribute to the decision AHPRA makes about your registration.

When you apply for Limited or Provisional AHPRA Registration, AHPRA will have your PESCI results straight from the PESCI Panel. They will also take into account past PESCI’s of other jobs in their decision making process. The AHPRA panel will read your recommendations, and see whether you have taken steps to engage in further learning to address the identified limitations or have identified the steps to be taken in your Supervision Plan. This will ultimately affect their decision on whether you will make a good GP and whether they should grant you registration.

The more PESCI’s you sit and fail, the less likely AHPRA is to grant you registration- unless you can prove that you have taken steps to implement the recommendations.

Don’t worry though, the easiest way to make sure your PESCI doesn’t negatively affect your registration is to take the PESCI panels’ recommendations into account and undertake CPD or other activities to demonstrate you’re working on the areas you may have needed improvement in.
