What is the Fellowship Support Program?
RACGP’s Fellowship Support Program, also known as FSP, is a self-funded education and training program that helps Doctors attain their Fellowship after finishing their GP training, workplace-based assessments and in-practice supervision by accredited supervisors at approved practice/s. Applications are usually open at the start of the year (around January) and at the middle of the year (around July).
For the FSP 2027.1 intake, there will be a new structure, education model and entry requirements, specifically for stronger early support, enhanced education, and closer alignment with RACGP educational frameworks.
What are the 2027.1 changes in the FSP?
Here are some key changes you need to know about:
- Program entry pathways: Two flexible, competency-based entry points:
- Standard entry – Foundation Term: Six-month Foundation Term for applicants who:
- hold limited or provisional registration (with a minimum of level 2 supervision), or
- have limited experience in the Australian healthcare system, or
- do not meet the paediatric competency requirement
- Advanced entry – FSP Term 1: Applicants must:
- hold general registration
- meet the paediatric competency requirement
- Standard entry – Foundation Term: Six-month Foundation Term for applicants who:
- Program Time:
- Standard entry: 2.5 years FTE
- Advanced entry: 2 years FTE
- Supervision: As an applicant, you will also need to nominate a supervisor who will be:
- Supervising for 80% of the time, onsite during Fundamentals Term, GPT1, & GPT2
- Supervising for 50% of the time, onsite during GPT3 & GPT4
- In-practice Teaching for 1 hr/day first fortnight, then 1 hr/fortnight afterwards during Fundamentals Term & GPT1
- In-practice Teaching for 1hr/fortnight during GPT2
- In-practice Teaching for 0.5 hr/fortnight during GPT3 & GPT4
- Out-of-practice education: 2-day introductory workshop & Small group learning for Fundamentals Term & GPT1
- Out-of-practice education: Small group learning for GPT2 & GPT3
- FSP Terms 1–4: Registrars complete four six-month terms, supported by:
- a face-to-face introductory workshop at the start of training
- small-group learning sessions concentrated in early training
- medical educator workplace-based assessment (WBA) visits concentrated in early training
- Fees: FSP fees will increase from 2027.1. See the fees section below.
Please note if you qualify for advanced entry, you’ll receive 6 months RPLE, cutting your training to 2 years FTE. If you have General Registration, you’ll need to submit additional evidence when applying for your RPLE assessment.
What will I do in the program?
This will depend on your entry point—Standard or Advanced.
If you’re in the Standard entry point, you will need to complete the Fundamentals term (6 months FTE in community general practice) first before proceeding to GPT1-4.
For both entry points, you will need to complete 24 months FTE community in general practice (GPT1-4), prepare to take your RACGP Fellowship exams (AKT, KFP, & CCE), and finish all Fellowship requirements.

Am I Eligible?
To participate on FSP, you need to meet the following criteria and a few additional requirements, depending on your entry point:
- Medical Registration: Have a General, Provisional (with AMC Certificate), or Limited Medical Registration with AHPRA and with Level 2, 3, or 4 supervision by the application closing date
- Standard Entry:
- Have Limited or Provisional Medical Registration with AHPRA (with a minimum of Level 2 supervision)
- Have limited Australian healthcare experience
- Does not meet the paediatric competency requirement
- Advanced Entry:
- Hold General Medical Registration with AHPRA
- Meet the paediatric competency requirement
- Standard Entry:
- Right to Work: Have the right to work in Australia and provide supporting evidence
- Exam Candidacy: Have at least 1 exam semester remaining if you already sat RACGP Fellowship exams
- Clinical Experience: Have a minimum of 24 months (104 weeks FTE) of clinical experience, completed after medical school and by the close of FSP applications, that:
- is in a hospital or community setting (Australia or overseas)
- involves direct patient contact, including care for patients with undifferentiated, acute, and/or chronic illness
- falls within 10 years prior to starting the first FSP general practice term
- Training Site: Start arranging a training site that is:
- in MM2-7 (unless you have an extenuating and unforeseen circumstances that allow you to work in a MM1)
- accredited under the RACGP Standards for general practice training 4th edition (see the list of currently accredited training sites for FSP here)
- providing your employment at the start of the program and be for at least 6 months with:
- Part Time: Minimum of 14.5 hours over two days every week, with at least 10.5 hours of face-to-face, rostered, patient consultation time undertaking general practice activities
- Full Time: Minimum of 27 hours in face-to-face,rostered, patient consultation time undertaking general practice activities in a fulltime training 38-hour working week (pro-rata for part-time training)
- Supervisor: Nominate a supervisor by the nomination deadline that:
- has no restrictions on their Specialist GP Registration with AHPRA
- has current comprehensive Australian general practice experience
- agrees to complete ongoing professional development and specific supervisor training
- is accredited under the RACGP’s Standards for General Practice Training (4th ed.) or has submitted an Expression of Interest by the FSP application closing date to become an accredited supervisor
- will not be supervising more than 3 registrars, including yourself, across any training programs
- must meet the onsite requirement
Please note the training site and supervisor details on your AHPRA medical registration must match the nominated supervisor and training site and must be accredited as a training site/supervisor under the RACGP Standards for general practice training 4th edition by the training site and supervisor nomination deadline. Things to note:
- If you have a training site/s listed on your Ahpra medical registration, you can only train at this site/s and they must be an accredited training site.
- It’s your responsibility to communicate with the supervisor that they must be accredited or become accredited by the FSP application closing date.
- The primary supervisor is required to be the nominated supervisor on your FSP application. In the event of extenuating circumstances, the RACGP may consider a co-supervisor to be nominated. The co-supervisor needs to be able to meet the supervision requirement and be on-site.
How many supervisees can my supervisor have?
For FSP, the supervisor to registrar ratio is 1:3. A supervisor can only oversee up to three registrars over time, regardless of training fraction and training program (e.g. AGPT, PFP, IP, FSP)
How do I apply?
There are 5 stages for the FSP application process:
- Step 1 – Eligibility
- Make sure you meet the FSP eligibility criteria by seeing the eligibility flowchart (Page 14) that includes medical registration, right to work, exam candidacy, and more. Also, check which entry point your are eligible for.

- Step 4 – National Entry Assessment
- RACGP will review your application for eligibility. If you’re deemed eligible, you’ll need to book, pay $190 (non-refundable) fee and sit the national entry assessment.
- Notes:
- The assessment “is an online situational judgment test designed to evaluate your ability to reflect on and respond to interpersonal and professional dilemmas using critical reasoning and social interpretation,” and is administered by Acuity Insights (a third-party provider).
- You can only sit the assessment once per calendar year (1 January – 31 December).
- Assessment outcomes are valid only for the calendar year in which you first applied.
- Your result will apply to any RACGP training program application (FSP or AGPT) made during that calendar year. If your performance is below the minimum standard, you won’t be able to make any further applications in that calendar year to any RACGP training program.
- Assessment fees are non-refundable.
- Step 5 – Application Outcome

Once accepted, you will need to pay the $525 non-refundable acceptance fee and first term invoice, as well as complete any necessary steps (e.g. nominate your training site and supervisor by the program offer acceptance deadline, apply for RACGP FSP Medicare provider number, become a financial member of the RACGP, etc.).
- Please note that you will need to complete a basic life support (BLS) course within 12 months prior to your start date on the FSP.

What are the program fees?
You will have to pay the program fees at the start of each semester and maintain your RACGP membership throughout the program.
If you want to see the fees with specific details, you can check the full list of FSP fees here, but the chart below is a summary of the costs you can expect to pay for the program.

What other fees are payable?

- RACGP Fellowship exams:
- Applied Knowledge Test (AKT): $2,868
- Key Feature Problem (KFP): $2,868
- Clinical Competency Exam (CCE): $5,866
Is it possible to have remote supervision in the FSP?
While onsite supervision is the priority, remote supervision may be requested for very remote locations, especially for registrars who apply for changes in circumstances. Here are a few of the eligibility requirements:
- Training Site: Located in MMM4+
- Registrar: Has at least six months’ comprehensive general practice experience
- Supervisor: Has experience supervising or remote supervising (A minimum of 2 years’ experience is recommended)
Please note that your stage of training, your progress in the program, and your educational needs may also be considered as factors for the request. Once you submit a remote supervision request, the review time may take up to four additional weeks.
