Becoming an accredited Fellowship Support Program (FSP) Training Site is an essential step in hosting registrars and supporting their FSP journey towards Fellowship. Here’s a quick guide to walk you through the process!

What does FSP Training Site accreditation involve?

Accreditation ensures your practice meets the standards required for general practice training. It includes:

  • A review of your submitted documents and information.
  • A virtual site visit conducted via Zoom (lasting 45 minutes to 1 hour) with the practice manager.
  • A focus on the practice environment, including the registrar’s consulting room, supervision arrangements, and staff support.
  • Note: No cost associated with the accreditation of your practice as an FSP training site.

What are the eligibility requirements for accreditation?

To qualify as an FSP training site, your practice must:

Please note that in the FSP, the training site must already be accredited by the time of application, while the supervisor nominated by the applicant must be accredited against the RACGP standards for general practice training before the applicant commences training.

How do I become accredited?

  • STEP 1: Nomination or Expression of Interest (EOI)
    • Your practice needs to be nominated by an FSP registrar or submit an EOI. RACGP will then assess your eligibility and if your practice is selected for accreditation, you will be invited to submit a full application.
  • STEP 2: Submit Full Application
    • You will provide detailed information about the training environment and proposed supervisors.
  • STEP 3: Prepare for the Site Visit
    • RACGP staff (including a medical educator) visit the practice (in person or virtually) to assess the environment, meet the team, and verify documents.
    • The virtual site visit will focus on your practice environment. Supervisors aren’t required for this step, but will meet separately with a Medical Educator later. Before the visit, review the FSP Accreditation Handbook to understand the expectations.
  • STEP 4: Accreditation Granted
    • If you have been granted accreditation, you will either receive a Full Accreditation (valid for 3 years) Provisional Accreditation (valid for 12 months). At accreditation, the training site and RACGP will sign a formal agreement outlining responsibilities
    • Notes for practices with Provisional Accreditation during the 12-month period:
      • New supervisors must complete onboarding professional development requirements prior to the placement of the first registrar
      • Registrar placement occurs
      • Feedback and monitoring are used to determine readiness for full accreditation
  • STEP 5: Maintain and Renew Accreditation
    • Accreditation is valid for three years, with regular monitoring to ensure ongoing compliance. After this period, you’ll need to renew it if you continue hosting registrars.

Key Points to Remember

  • No Cost: Accreditation is free as part of hosting an FSP registrar.
  • Accreditation for AGPT/FSP: As the Standards for General Practice Training cover all programs, a separate accreditation is not required. You are however, required to familiarise yourself with the program requirements for each program, FSP or AGPT or both.
  • Opportunities for Growth: Becoming a training site enhances your reputation, builds collaborative relationships, and brings fresh ideas into your practice.
  • Program Commencement:
    • Before starting, please note that registrars, supervisors, and training sites must sign agreements with the RACGP. These agreements cover training site details, employment, supervision, and education.
    • Registrars and training sites must also make sure to have a valid RACGP FSP Medicare provider number (MPN) before starting work. MPN applications are processed through RACGP, and the application form will be provided when registrars are accepted into the FSP. It must be completed in collaboration with the training site to avoid errors.

By following these steps and reminders, you can prepare your practice to welcome and support FSP registrars while gaining professional development opportunities and building a vibrant team. If you’re ready to take the next step, start your accreditation process today and visit the RACGP website or read more about the Fellowship Support Program on our blog here.
