Clinic Accreditation for GP Training Programs

AGPT
STEP 1: Check if your clinic is eligible to be a training site
Your clinic must meet the following requirements to apply for accreditation:
- is located where training sites are needed
- have a current accreditation that meets the RACGP Standards for general practices
- is able to assist and ensure the safety of a registrar in their training ground
- hand over enough patient numbers with different backgrounds to give the registrar enough experience with general practice
- contain a silent area where teaching, learning, and studying can take place
- have a consultation room that is equipped and dedicated to patients, RACGP also specified the following equipment:
- “computer and internet access with suitable communication software to allow the registrar to participate in education activities
- access to a telephone and fax machine
- equipment to access and update patient records, including health screening and recall systems o access to online and/or physical resources to support clinical decision making
- contact details for alternative avenues of support and information”
STEP 2: Provide an expression of interest (EOI)
You can send your expression of interest to RACGP here on their website if your clinic is eligible. Please note that RACGP is currently not taking any EOI submissions for this year as they are preparing for 2024 placements. For ACRRM, you can check their accreditation page here.
You can also submit only one application to obtain accreditation from both the RACGP and ACRRM through the website of either college. They will request authorization to exchange information between the colleges.
STEP 3: Submit an online application with the necessary documents
After sending an EOI, an online application link will be sent to you if it is deemed suitable. Once the application details are filled up and required files are attached, you can submit it and the local training coordinator will review your application.
STEP 4: Cooperate in the site visit
Site visits will be scheduled along with the regional accreditation coordinator and the local training coordinator which may be online or face-to-face. There will also be interviews conducted by the local medical educator with the possible supervisor/s. If there are any more requirements needed, they will advise you.
STEP 5: Wait for and advance to the approval and agreements
Both the regional accreditation coordinator and the medical educator will approve your application and recommend you for an accreditation then an accreditation certificate will be awarded to you.
Please note that the provisional accreditation is given for the first 12 months of training. The college will contact and review your practice regularly. If deemed suitable, your practice is granted full accreditation with a 3-year period validity.
If you applied for both RACGP and ACRRM, then you will be accredited for both and the two colleges will share data.
STEP 6: Comply with monitoring and re-accreditation process
After gaining full accreditation, your practice will constantly be observed by the college/s to ensure the rules and regulations are being followed which may help you in the re-accreditation process after 3 years.
RACGP-FSP
STEP 1: Be nominated by a FSP applicant
The accreditation of a practice is based on an FSP registrar’s application where registrars must propose the practice as their training site. From there, RACGP will check if the practice is eligible to be accredited.
Please note that all practices that have AGPT accreditation are considered as “accredited training sites” for the FSP program.
STEP 2: Check if your clinic is eligible to be a training site
Your clinic must meet the following requirements to apply for accreditation:
- is in MMM 2 – 7 locations except if there are extenuating circumstances
- must have an accreditation against the RACGP Standards for general practices and against the relevant RACGP Standards for general practices training
- equipment to access and update patient records, including health screening and recall systems
- access to online resources to support clinical decision making
- contact details for alternative avenues of support and information”
If your practice is eligible, RACGP will contact you for the next steps of the process.
STEP 3: Cooperate in the site visit
As stated in the FSP Accreditation Handbook, an onsite or virtual site visit is a requirement and will be conducted for all practices under the accreditation process.
Keep in mind that FSP site accreditation will be concentrated on the learning environment, consultation room, supervision team, and other inquiries related to the expectations of a training site.
The medical educator will also check and notify you if your clinic, along with the proposed primary supervisor, is suited for accreditation. If both are eligible, then the supervisor must accomplish the Foundations of GP supervision program modules.
STEP 4: Monitor and review along with RACGP
Once the registrar completes a six-month placement, the RACGP offers a chance for granting full accreditation to the practice through constant communication and feedback.
Take note that there is a 3-year period validity after the accreditation is granted.
Note: The information presented above has been gathered from RACGP and ACRRM web pages, and has been updated as of 17.06.2023.
