What Is Medical Indemnity Insurance?

Medical Indemnity is your safety net. Basically, in case you make a mistake or are perceived to have made a mistake, your insurance will cover the expenses and potential payout costs.

Who are the options?

AHPRA lists the following as options for Medical indemnity insurers:

  • Avant
  • Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (distributed by Tego Insurance)
  • Guild Insurance Limited
  • MDA National
  • Medical Indemnity Protection Society Limited (MIPS)
  • Medical Insurance Group (MIGA)

Why?

If you’re a practicing medical practitioner, you must have Indemnity Insurance—it is a requirement of your registration with AHPRA that you agree to get Indemnity.

The things you want to look for in your insurer are the availability, level of cover & the expertise of their legal team. It is important that you research your choice thoroughly, as they’ll be partnering with you and if you get into a pickle—you want to feel supported!
