Medical Indemnity Insurance- What, Who and Why?
What Is It?
Medical Indemnity is ‘insurance against civil liability incurred by, or loss arising from, a claim that is made as a result of a negligent act, error or omission in the conduct of the practitioner.’ Basically, in case you make a mistake or are perceived to have made a mistake, your insurance will cover the expenses and potential payout costs.
Who are the options?
AHPRA lists the following as options for Medical indemnity insurers:
- Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (distributed by Tego Insurance)
- Guild Insurance Limited
- MDA National
- Medical Indemnity Protection Society Limited (MIPS)
- Medical Insurance Group (MIGA)
If you’re a practicing medical practitioner, you must have Indemnity Insurance- it is a requirement of your registration with AHPRA that you agree to get Indemnity.
The things you want to look for in your insurer are the availability, level of cover & the expertise of their legal team. It is important that you research your choice thoroughly, as they’ll be partnering with you and if you get into a pickle- you want to feel supported!
