Need help understanding your pathway?

Date Updated: 2025-11-11

There are two applications for Limited AHPRA Registration:

  • Limited AHPRA Registration for Post Graduate Training & Supervised Practice which you are eligible for with AMC Part 1.
  • Limited AHPRA Registration for Area of Need, which you are eligible for with AMC Part 1 & 3 years assessed GP experience.

The differences between these two are the experience required and the change in the documents you have to provide!

Limited AHPRA Registration – Area of Need

This type of registration is for those who are working under supervision in an area where there is a shortage of medical practitioners. If the practice holds an Area of Need certificate and you have 3 years assessed experience, you can apply for Area of Need. Please note if you have 3 years FTE experience in general practice or primary care, you will also need a PESCI before AHPRA processes your application for registration.

Please note that it isn’t required to have your experience be assessed by RACGP, but AHPRA will conduct a similar assessment so this ensures you are safe!

What are the requirements?

You will need to submit:

  • AHPRA CV
  • Evidence of eligibility for registration via the Standard Pathway or the Specialist Pathway – Area of Need
  • Evidence of 3 years (full-time equivalent) experience in general practice or primary care, if you are applying for registration to work in a general practice position
  • Successful completion of a PESCI if you are applying via the Standard Pathway to work in a general practice position

Limited AHPRA Registration – Post Graduate Training & Supervised Practice

Typically, this type of registration is for international medical graduates (IMGs) who are undertaking supervised training in Australian hospitals/General Practice, or who are working so that they can sit for Australian Medical Council (AMC) Clinical examination. You can also use this pathway if the practice you are applying for is not located within an “Area of Need” location, and you will be required to provide a training plan. You also can sit for a PESCI before applying for this registration.

There are many doctors presently using this as a way of getting around the Area of Need 3 year requirement. The guidelines for this pathway do not specifically state you need to have a certain amount of General Practice experience, but keep in mind that your experience will still be considered as a part of the assessment process.

What are the requirements?

As part of your application, you will need to provide:

  • AHPRA CV
  • A supervision plan
  • A training plan

Please note that the training plan should outline the CPD and other training activities you will undergo during the first year of registration. This can include activities to close any gaps in your clinical knowledge, the study you will undergo in order to prepare for sitting your AMC clinical exam, and at what point you will apply for General AHPRA registration.

Your training plan needs to be specific to your needs and will be reviewed by AHPRA upon renewal of your next registration period. Every 3 months, throughout your initial 12 months of registration, a report will be prepared by your supervisor and provided to AHPRA as an update on your progress. If you are found to have not complied with your training plan, there is a risk that your registration can potentially be suspended or refused on the following renewal.
