Yes. As a supervised GP, you may apply for a change in supervision level even if you have yet to complete the required period under Level 1 supervision.
You have 2 options. First, submit a performance assessment report and complete a new PESCI OR complete AMC Clinical. Then, this can be done if you are able to present the following requirements to AHPRA:
- WRIG-30 Performance assessment report AND completion of new PESCI
- Your performance assessment report must clearly indicate your supervisor’s recommendation to change your supervision from Level 1 to Level 2. You must also include your strengths and achievement of learning outcomes.
- Completion of a new PESCI which is intended for a GP applying for Level 2. PESCI is an objective assessment of your knowledge, skills, clinical experience and attributes to determine if you are suitable to practice in a specific position, or in this case, if you are ready for Level 2. Read more about PESCI here.
OR
- Completion of AMC Clinical
- The AMC Clinical exam assesses a GP’s clinical skills in medical, surgical, women’s health, paediatrics, and mental health in both hospital and community settings. It also assesses your ability to communicate with patients, their families and other health workers. Completion of AMC Clinical is one of the major milestones a GP manifests progress in his/her medical career.
Why would I seek a change in supervision level even if I have not completed the required Level 1 Supervision period?
AHPRA endorses a variation of Level 1 supervision period for GPs. Some get 3 months while others get 6, 9, or even 12 months!
Whilst a GP is on Level 1 supervision:
- The supervisor has 100% responsibility for the patients the GP is seeing.
- The supervisor must be present 100% of the time whilst the GP is at work. Otherwise, the GP will cease to practice in the absence of a supervisor.
- The GP is ineligible for a fellowship program like FSP.
GPs and practices may feel a bit restrained with a long period of Level 1 supervision.
For GPs, they would like to have a bit of independence while working. They may also desire to speed up progress on their Australian GP careers but they are confined to a limited elbow room while on Level 1.
For supervisors, their hands are tied as they are responsible for the Level 1 GPs.
This might be a good time to check if you can change your supervision level, but please note that you must meet the requirements above!
