How many IMGs can a supervisor oversee on Level 1 Supervision?

Under the AHPRA guidelines, if a supervisor is still seeing their own patients while supervising, they can only supervise one IMG on Level 1 and up to three other IMGs on Levels 2, 3, or 4—with a total maximum of four IMGs. Although, if a supervisor isn’t seeing their own patients during the supervision period, they can supervise up to four IMGs in total, and this can include more than one IMG on Level 1.

Just a heads-up—stricter guidelines exist for supervision capacities with the 3GA programs.

The key rule is the 1:3 ratio: A supervisor can only oversee up to three registrars, regardless of training fraction and training program (e.g. AGPT, PFP, IP, FSP) at any given time.

Training program management takes supervision capacity into account in every application, so it’s worth checking your current load before taking on any new supervision responsibilities—otherwise, it could result in a program application being rejected.
