What is a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

As a GP, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can help you reduce your program time or reduce the academic requirements you need to accomplish in a Fellowship program. This is because RPL assesses the skills and experience you’ve gained from your previous education, training, or employment, so you can see if the formal qualifications in Australia apply to you or if you have already done them in the past.

ACRRM Fellowship Programs

You can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) during your training program orientation for AGPT, RVTS, IP, or RGTS. The maximum amount of RPL is 2 years and it will be based on your experience, alignment with the ACRRM curriculum, and your individual training plan

RACGP Fellowship Programs

There are different criteria for each of the programs in the RPL policy.

For AGPT applicants commencing General Practice Training from 2026 onwards, RPLE is no longer available as credit towards the Extended Skills Training term.

For RVTS, you can apply for RPL if you have any of the following:

  • 12 weeks FTE – 52 weeks FTE of Hospital Rotations completed after Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY2+), of which a maximum of 26 calendar weeks FTE can be in any one discipline, or
  • Up to 26 weeks FTE of prior general practice experience, or
  • Up to 52 weeks FTE of a combination of Hospital Rotations and general practice experience

For FSP, RPL will only be eligible for those who have previously voluntarily withdrawn from AGPT or RVTS. If so, you can apply and possibly reduce your program time for a maximum of 26 calendar weeks.

How do I get an RPL in Australia?

If you feel confident that you have the supporting documents, you can contact a Registered Training Organizations (RTO) to begin your skills assessment. Once the requirements are met and the assessor is satisfied that you meet Australian standards, you will be issued an RPL certificate.

With the RPL certificate, you can apply for RPL to help you reduce your program time or reduce the academic requirements you need to accomplish in a Fellowship program.
